The mill of Muids

Version Française : Old mill Vernon

A mill with pending wheel

The mill of Muids, a half-timbered construction, lays on two stone walls. It steps over a branch of the Seine river. The mechanism is made of a moving frame that enables to tune the height of the wheel to the river level.

The mill of Muids and the mill of Andé are the last mills of this kind in Europe. They were very common in the area and especially on the arches of the bridges crossing the Seine (such as the Saint-Jean mill at Vernon).

The painting from Aston Knight

Louis-Aston Knight (1873-1948) painted the Mill of Muids probably in 1895-96.

A lot of prints have been made of this painting.

The original has been sold by Sotheby's in 1968 but we ignore who was the buyer .

If you know the present owner, please tell him that we would like to get in touch with him.
